AI Can Scale Your Voice. It Can Also Erase It.

AI can help you sound like yourself more often. It can also help everybody sound like nobody.

The productivity upside is enormous. Research, organization, transcription, editing, repurposing, and production can all move faster. But speed is not voice, and a tone prompt is not a personality.

Voice is accumulated judgment

Language is part of voice. So are the rooms you have been in, the mistakes you have made, the people you trust, the industries you understand, the jokes you make, the things that irritate you, and the lines you will not cross.

A model can help express those things. It cannot retroactively live them for you.

Use AI to increase the surface area of your judgment, not to replace the judgment.

The real risk is plausible sameness

Bad AI copy is easy to spot. The more interesting problem is perfectly acceptable copy that could belong to anyone.

As competent drafting gets cheaper, generic professional language gets cheaper with it. So do generic hot takes, generic summaries, and generic inspiration.

Give the system evidence of you

Your archive, conversations, notes, corrections, presentations, interviews, and actual opinions are more useful than a paragraph asking a model to be “authentic, bold, and conversational.”

This is why I would build a source library before obsessing over a prompt library. The machine should have more real material to work with, not permission to invent the missing parts.

Use AI around the voice

  • Good leverage: retrieval, comparison, organization, transcription, first-pass structure, repurposing, QA, and production assistance.
  • Keep accountable: thesis, factual claims, lived context, humor, disagreement, taste, final judgment, and the decision to publish.

Those are not rigid job descriptions. The point is to know when the system is assisting expression and when it has quietly started manufacturing the point of view.

Scale the signal, not the sludge

The internet does not need every person to publish twenty times more material because the marginal cost fell. It needs people with something worth saying to become better at finding, shaping, and distributing it.
